This volume will tell the story of the preparations that were made for war by the people in Gibraltar, from the Sudeten Crisis of autumn 1938 until the outbreak of war in September 1939, and how the war affected the people (men, women and children) in the first few months leading up to the evacuation to Morocco.

The next volume will re-examine the evacuation and tell the story of those who stayed behind, in the period leading up to the turning point of the war, which was Operation Torch (the North Africa landings) in November 1942. The final volume will look at the period when the threat of action against Gibraltar faded, and the repatriation began, up to the end of the war in Europe and the war in Japan in 1945.
