ABOUT

Every November, Gibraltar transforms into a vibrant hub of ideas, hosting an array of internationally acclaimed writers, thinkers, journalists, historians, and performers. Against the dramatic backdrop of the Rock, our festival brings together audiences and authors in a celebration of storytelling across genres and generations.

Our Story

Founded in 2013, the Gibunco Gibraltar Literary Festival has grown into one of the leading literary events in the Mediterranean. Sponsored by the Gibunco Group and supported by HM Government of Gibraltar, the festival has welcomed some of the world’s most distinguished voices—from best-selling novelists and political commentators to acclaimed chefs, broadcasters, and poets.

A Festival Like No Other

What sets us apart is our location: a meeting point between Europe and Africa, Britain and the Mediterranean. Gibraltar’s rich history and vibrant cultural life create a unique setting where stories come alive. Our venues—from historic buildings to open-air spaces—offer an intimate and inspiring atmosphere for debate, discovery, and celebration.

Educational Programme

The Gibunco Gibraltar Literary Festival remains steadfast in its commitment to nurturing a love for literature among young readers through its ever-growing educational programme. Each year, the festival curates a rich series of interactive workshops, book readings, and Q&A sessions, giving students the rare opportunity to learn directly from celebrated authors and illustrators.

In the 2025 edition, we were delighted to welcome James Mayhew, renowned illustrator, author, and creator of the much-loved Katie and Ella Bella Ballerina series. Mayhew’s sessions combined art, storytelling, and live illustration, offering students an unforgettable insight into the magic of bringing stories to life on the page.

These encounters continue to offer students invaluable access to the creative processes of accomplished writers and illustrators, deepening their appreciation for literature and inspiring their own artistic journeys.

As we move forward, we are preparing our most ambitious programme yet—an exciting six-day celebration filled with unmissable events, compelling voices, and new opportunities for young readers to connect with the world of books.

The continued generosity of the John Mackintosh Educational Trust makes this growing educational programme possible, ensuring that the next generation of readers and writers in Gibraltar continues to thrive.

Pop-up Bookshop

As part of the festival experience, we host a dedicated pop-up bookshop throughout the week, creating a space where visitors can discover and purchase books by our featured authors. It also offers a unique opportunity for authors and audiences to connect through meet-and-greet sessions and book signings, fostering memorable exchanges and celebrating the shared joy of storytelling.

Each edition offers attendees the invaluable opportunity to engage directly with authors, gaining insight into their creative processes and the narratives they shape. Now, having celebrated its landmark 10th anniversary in 2025, the festival continues to stand as a beacon of literary celebration and discovery, one that remains dedicated to supporting writers, inspiring readers, and cultivating a vibrant literary community for years to come.
