Gibraltar Cultural Services, on behalf of the Ministry of Culture, is delighted to announce the publication and official launch of Gustavo Bacarisas, a beautifully illustrated children’s book written and illustrated by local artist Shane Dalmedo. The publication, produced by GCS, celebrates the extraordinary life and legacy of one of Gibraltar’s most iconic figures in the arts and Gibraltar’s first Freeman of the City.
The launch of this special title aligns with a series of key cultural moments in 2025, including VE Day 80 and Heritage Week, the 10th Anniversary of the Mario Finlayson National Gallery on 3rd June, and serves as an exciting prelude to this year’s Gibunco Gibraltar Literary Festival, taking place in November.
The event brought together guests to honour Bacarisas’ remarkable artistic journey, thoughtfully brought to life through Dalmedo’s captivating illustrations and storytelling. The book has been years in the making, developed through dedicated research and a deep passion for preserving Gibraltar’s cultural heritage.
As part of the celebrations, the Gibraltar Academy of Music and Performing Arts (GAMPA) will stage a special theatrical adaptation of the book on Friday 9th May, offering an imaginative and engaging interpretation of the story for younger audiences.
Gustavo Bacarisas is now available for purchase from BookGem, the Gibraltar Heritage Trust, and The City Hall.
