Prof. Khalid Bekkaoui

Khalid Bekkaoui is a Professor of English and Cultural Studies at the Faculty of Letters and Human Sciences, Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdellah University in Fez, Morocco. He also serves as the Director of the Moroccan Cultural Studies Centre. He earned his MA from Fez University in 1990 and completed his PhD at Abdelmalik Essaadi University in Tetouan in 1996.

His academic work focuses on Orientalism, Occidentalism, gender, culture, media studies, and cross-cultural encounters between Morocco and the Anglo-American world. Bekkaoui is the author of Signs of Spectacular Resistance: The Spanish Moor in British Orientalism (1998) and has edited works such as George Peele’s The Battle of Alcazar (2000) and Imagining Morocco: An Anthology of Anglo-American Short Fiction (2008). His more recent books include White Women Captives in North Africa (Palgrave, 2011), The British Bride of Tangier: The Extraordinary Love Story of Emily Shareefa of Wazzan (2012), and Maghrebi Sufism Youth Gender Politics and the West (2013, in Arabic).

Bekkaoui’s research often examines themes of migration, identity, and cultural exchange. His project Moroccans in Europe: Fassi Merchants Come to Manchester (2016) explores Moroccan diaspora experiences in the UK. He is currently working on a book titled Muslim Discovery of America, which investigates historical and cultural connections between North Africa and the Americas.

He was a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at SUNY Binghamton from 1999 to 2000 and continues to collaborate internationally through lectures, research, and his leadership at the Moroccan Cultural Studies Centre.

His book ‘Necklace and Pomegranates', is a multicultural historical work set in the dynamic world of late Victorian Gibraltar. The book is a narrative of love, cultural heritage, history, memory and the complexities of identity. Professors Bekkaoui’s participation is made possible with the support of the Gibraltar Moroccan Business Association in Tangier.
